Retired Principal Tales

Taking One Day at a Time

One Question I Dislike

The one question I do not like to be asked is “So how do you like retirement?” It is not a bad question, and those who ask me are being kind. I just do not like to say, “I love it,” because really, I do not, but to stay positive, I say I do. Or I say that I’m semi-retired.

I’m used to multi-tasking. I remember those first few weeks when I did not have to go to work. What now? Sit in the recliner? Scroll endlessly?

I didn’t do any of those things. I am retired, but still keeping busy. Teaching college is keeping me REALLY busy this semester. The grandkids keep getting older and are more active in sports, therefore, filling up my schedule with games nearly every day. I love that. My daughter’s appointments are still numerous. I don’t love that and the uncertainty each day brings with her conditions.

There are just so many other questions that could possibly be worse, but that one always reminds me that I am old. My physical body ALSO reminds me of that each time the weather front moves through. I am a lot smarter in my old age, so that is a good thing. I love to tell stories of life experiences I have had with my kids throughout my child development classes when we discuss behavior at a certain stage of childhood. I guess I’ve found what works for me for now. I know that in 2030 my teaching license expires. Will I renew it for five more years? If I’m able to do the job, of course!

Later…

  1. Retirement is not always the endless relaxation that often people have imagine. Sometimes it simply repositioning the kinds of responsibilities and joys we have.
