Retired Principal Tales

Taking One Day at a Time

Tricky Old Steps

Recently, I found out that my dear friend took a horrible fall down some old, tricky steps. Luckily, she did not break any bones or have a concussion, but man, she has black eyes, stitches, and multiple other injuries from falling down some old, tricky steps that were not, let’s say, uniform. I might mention that her fall occurred on the church steps, from the second floor to the first, so it was not just a couple of steps. I feel so bad for her. The good thing is that she always has a good attitude and looks at life with a positive outlook even through all of this. She really has been a wonderful friend to have through this life.

What caused her to fall? The unexpected, of course! She thinks she missed a step that turned differently on the unique staircase. The unexpected step that all of us could take a fall on at any time. Since this happened in the church, it makes me want to ask God why he was not protecting her as she was doing God’s work and carrying things down the stairs, without being able to see each and every step that she probably walked up and down thousands of times during her life. The carpenters who designed these steps had their own designs, which, at the time, I am sure were so intricate and appreciated. The stairs are still lovely carpentry, but many of us who are “more mature” and have “unsteady footing and knees” have difficulty navigating them. I trust in God, believe me. I just wish my friend had not had such a fall, especially in the house of the Lord, or in any other place, for that matter!

Maybe my friend’s fall was for a reason that we do not know. Was it to let us all know to pay attention and keep Him first in our lives? I know my friend does, but what if the lesson was to use her as a reminder for all of us to put Him first? She is loved by so many in our community and always serves others with love and kindness. There are so many things going on in our world that need us to go to church every week (and daily) and pray. Our beloved children need a world of sanity to grow up in. I pray that my children, grandchildren, and all people on this Earth have a good place to grow up and raise families of their own.

Be like my friend. Despite her physical aches and pains and her rough appearance from the fall, she will still serve with love and kindness because that is who she is. She is always there to listen and help, however she can, with the biggest dose of patience you have ever seen. I pray that she starts feeling better physically with the aches and pains, plus stitches! I know one thing we can count on. Her sweet soul will remain sweet through it all. Love you, my friend, more than you will ever know.

Later…
