Retired Principal Tales

Taking One Day at a Time

Daily writing prompt
Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

Any time I get the house to myself is playtime! I rarely get to just sit and not be interrupted by calls from my daughter yelling, “MOMMMMM!” She is forty two and on the spectrum at level 1 or 2. Usually, it is something not that important. Mommm….it’s going to rain tomorrow, or if I’m lucky, I get a rehash of the whole forecast for the rest of the week. I may also get Mooommmm, and a stream of all the NFL scores. Her favorite is being the town crier of all the news on social media. She reads EVERYTHING about the local scuttle-butt aloud to me. I guess that will help me if and when I become blind in my old age! (Really, I don’t mind because I’m used to it. I’m so glad she is doing well since her cancer and liver transplant. I’m so glad all of that is behind us.) I just hope it never comes back! It’s just unusual to have silence in the house.

Playtime can also mean I’m going to go and learn more about Pickleball. I love to sew as well. I’m working on six blankets. I’m working on number three. I’d better hurry up, because it felt well below zero today due to 50-mph winds. I love the calmness it provides. Well, that is, until I got a puppy. She’s always into something!

If I were still a principal, playtime would be known as snow days! I physically would not be playing in the snow, but a day in the office without ten thousand interruptions was wonderful. I actually was able to get things that had been sitting on my desk finished after sitting on my desk for five months! My desk was RARELY cleared off at the end of each day.

Going to the Eagles Tribute band concert was a wild thing in my life. I look forward to going to Creedence Clearwater Revival in a few months with some of my friends. Listening to the oldies but goodies is always relaxing, especially when I can remember the words!

I love to go and watch my granddaughters play ball. Although it is not really a playtime for me, it makes me relax, except when the game is close! I get a little excited as my proof reveals. Last week, my granddaughter’s game came down to a shot at the buzzer. My granddaughter’s teammate made the shot and the crowd went wild! I forgot I had the video on and was hooting, screaming, and hollering all while my phone was aimed at the floor. I forgot I was holding it! My daughter-in-law thought it was funny when I sent it to her.

I always need more playtime.

Later…
