My former administrative assistant and I have something rare in common. Her husband and my daughter have both had liver transplants. In March, my daughter will celebrate the second anniversary of her transplant. My administrative assistant’s husband had a transplant a few days ago. Both had the transplant at the same hospital in the big city.
My AA is having anxiety, which is to be expected. I remember being amazed at how well my daughter did post op. As I learned, those folks in the Transplant department really know their stuff and are as smart as can be at finding solutions for unexpected issues that may arise. My A A was texting me back and forth this afternoon. I pray I can share what I have experienced and help her through this time. Today’s message was to take care of herself because she would be exhausted from all the driving, worry, and taking care of her husband. The other important message was that his immunity will be low, that he should stay away from people as much as possible, and that her husband will likely be tired for some time as he recuperates. I had to make many accommodations for my daughter. She would have to stop and sit maybe four times as we walked to the doctor’s office for visits. Eventually, she did better with that. It was a long way from the garage to the doctor’s office.
As we go along, I will fill her in if she wants to know about things. I do not want to bombard her with all that I know about this, almost two years post-transplant. I know that her husband will do well. I am so confident in the capabilities of all the transplant surgeons and the transplant nurses. That hospital is #1 in my book.
Who knew that after working together for almost 13 years, we’d have this in common?
