Do I trust my instincts? Yes, yes, and yes again. As a school principal, I always used my gut to make decisions. I wanted to do what was best for the students (and staff). My gut proved to be a good indicator of how I should make decisions.
Student elopement and rage were always two things that prompted me to use my gut. Where would that student run to? Where would they hide? What’s going on at home? I need to get this child some help. They are not safe, or are not getting their needs met, or are reeling in emotions. How will I know what to say to the parent? My gut always told me!
