I was reminded of a great story from my classroom days during my trip recently. Third graders were my favorites when it came to teaching. They were needy in the beginning, but during the year, these students became so independent. Watching that growth was truly rewarding as a teacher.
Third graders were so honest. One day, the journal prompt asked about what they looked forward to in middle and high school. One of my little girls was a wonderful writer, and I always looked forward to reading her entries. This day was no exception. She wrote, “I can’t wait until I have periods.” I laughed thinking she thinks this now, but wait until she gets them! Her mom was a teacher at the school, so I showed her what her daughter had written. Mom asked her about this when they went home. The daughter looked at her and said, “Periods. You know like when you move from class to class.” We both rolled with laughter the next morning as she explained that journal entry to me! Apparently, it’s a great memory, because her daughter is married and has two children now…and we still remember!
